Klei Kunst Route
With a mobile clay studio we went into the Tarwewijk in Rotterdam to clay objects with neighbours, kids and passers by. We asked them what they would like to add to their neighbourhood and make this. Then we fired and glazed the pieces and made an illegal art clay art route with it. On the left you see the map that shows you kind of where each piece is. Some are still there, most of them are removed.
In the 1950s, the philosopher Guy Debord coined the term 'psychogeography.' This technique involves aimlessly wandering through your surroundings without bringing preconceived notions and discovering new ways of seeing. By walking with psychogeographic techniques, it might be possible to find a sense of wonder and enchantment in your immediate environment; because you are wandering, there is space for imagination.
Psychogeography is the exploration of the city that emphasizes the connections and interactions we have with places and routes. It is also known as the science of drifting. Its goal is to challenge and reshape existing concepts about the urban environment that dictate how we engage with it. By wandering without knowing exactly what you're looking for or where you're going, your way of seeing, moving, and listening changes, allowing you to perhaps discover something new.
The clay-art route invites you to do just that: walk an unfamiliar route in search of something you’re not entirely sure of, remaining open to new experiences and wandering through your own neighborhood.
